A Letter From Our President
Welcome to the official website of the Eta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi! On behalf of my sisters, I am honored to give you a look in to our chapter. My name is Arlene Flannery, the President of this outstanding group of women.
When I came to George Mason University, I was extremely excited for the many opportunities ahead of me. I signed up for sorority recruitment and met many wonderful women within the Panhellenic community. There was, however, something different about the sisters of Alpha Phi. I knew that these were women that didn’t settle. The women of Alpha Phi were goal setting, goal achieving, and would enable me to be the person I dreamed of becoming before I even chose Mason.
I received my bid in the Fall of 2014 and ever since then my sisters have never let me settle. They saw qualities in me that I had not yet found in myself and enabled me to be the best version of myself. Within Alpha Phi I have my role models, my future bridesmaids, and my home 500 miles away from the home I’d always known.
George Mason University is an amazing campus, constantly innovating and striving to offer its students the tools they need to succeed in an ever-changing world. Joining Alpha Phi has been the perfect addition to my Mason experience. My sisters exemplify the diverse and innovative spirit of George Mason and inspire one another to take advantage of the opportunities this community has to offer. One of my sisters helped me land an internship at the American Red Cross Head Quarters and I was able assist refugees all over the world. My story is not unique. Ask an Alpha Phi and they will tell you their majors, internships, and jobs were a result of their connection with Alpha Phi.
Alpha Phi is an international organization with over 166 chapters and more then 200,00 members. We all share in our dedication to philanthropy and empowering collegiate women to effect change on their campuses, in their communities, and around the world. Who We Are
ALPHA PHI IS A SISTERHOOD OF OUTSTANDING WOMEN SUPPORTING ONE ANOTHER IN LIFELONG ACHIEVEMENT...
Since 1872, Alpha Phi has built our membership around the commitment to 6 values:
Alpha Phis cherish life-long friendships rooted in kindness, love and respect for one another. We believe in the concept of Watchcare - a tenet of our sisterhood which encourages support of one another through the good times and the bad, whether helping one another with academics or providing much needed support during a rough time.
Alpha Phi values each member's passion for education, knowledge, and achievement. Our founders were ten of the first twenty women admitted to Syracuse University in 1872 and they had the courage to persevere to earn a college education despite societal expectations at the time.
Alpha Phi supports those in need through service and philanthropy. We share a passion for helping one another and our surrounding communities. The Alpha Phi Foundation is one of the oldest Greek Foundations and works to raise awareness and funds in support of women's heart health.
Alpha Phis lead by example and strive for continuous, innovative improvement. Since her inception, Alpha Phi's founders encouraged one another to think, invent and improve. This pioneering spirit can be seen throughout Alpha Phi history and today - in our founding, our development of new chapters and our willingness to be an innovator as exemplified by our many "firsts".
Alpha Phis are members for a lifetime. We learn the value of loyalty and being true to each other and to our common ideals. Members continue to be devoted and connected sisters throughout college and beyond. They believe in stewardship and paying it forward such that those that come after them benefit from their legacy and the difference they made.
Alpha Phi fosters the qualities of strong character that distinguish our members and our sisterhood, including compassion, integrity and sincerity. In Alpha Phi, all members learn to lead by example through their actions and communication. They set expectations high for themselves and each other, and strive diligently to meet them.
