Favorite Alpha Phi memory:

There are way too many great memories to choose from but my top two would be: meeting my little Cords and having her finally become my little AND also finally finding my girl squad to do life with (The Flossey Possey)! I wouldn't be the person I am today without all the amazing people I have in my life today and that is all thanks to Alpha Phi.

Favorite Alpha Phi memory:

Being the President of Alpha Phi was a life changing experience. If someone told me four years ago that I would have the opportunity to lead a group of some of the most ambitious, beautiful, inspiring women on the George Mason campus I would have never believed them. Alpha Phi made me into a woman worthy of the title. The sisterhood taught me that though we are all different we all have something to offer our chapter, classes, campus, and world. The sisters of Alpha Phi don’t change who you are but amplify who you’ve always been and for that I will always be grateful. Thank you for making me a leader and your president. Love and AOE ladies 💛

My favorite Alpha Phi memory was getting my little! The entire week of reveal was an exciting process, I got to spoil her and give her fake clues as to who I was. She’s such an important person in my life now and I probably would have never met her if it wasn’t for alpha phi. I also really loved work week because it’s a time where every sister truely bonds and gets to know each other on a different level.

Favorite Alpha Phi Memory:

My favorite memory was running home back to my chapter after being a Rho Gamma. I got to do it with one of my best friends Erin Mitchell and we both loved it. Not only did I get to help other girls find their homes in other chapters, but I got to run back with 14 girls from my Rho Gamma group. Seeing them fall in love with Alpha Phi reminded me how much I love this chapter and everyone in it. Being away from my sisters for almost two months strengthened my love for Alpha Phi while also showing why I fell in love with this sisterhood in the first place. Getting to run back into my sisters' arms and reuniting with them was a moment I will never forget.

Bradley, or Cash as most know him by, has been a huge support to our chapter for a long time and we are so excited to create new memories as this coming school year approaches. Cash has participated in all of our events and has been more than just a pillar of support but a genuine friend to us all. His kindness and charisma are just two out of many wonderful attributes used to describe him-he is constantly going out of his way to develop friendships with our sisters and support us in any way he can. Get to know our new Bordeaux Beau in the article below!

1. Where would you consider home and what brought you to Mason? What is your major?

I consider Virginia Beach home. I've lived near the oceanfront for most of my life but I decided to come to Mason for the great opportunities that it offers and its proximity to DC.

2. How has Greek Life impacted your collegiate career?

Before I joined Greek Life I was relatively shy and reserved. After I joined a fraternity I kind of came out of my shell and it allowed me to be more social and interact with more people. Without Greek Life I would have never met some of my best friends.

3. What are you most looking forward to being Alpha Phi's 2017-2018 Bordeaux Beau ?

I'm most looking forward to participating in all of the fundraisers and philanthropy events that Alpha Phi puts on during the year such as King of Hearts and Red Dress Gala. The Alpha Phi Foundation is one of my favorite philanthropies on campus to support because it helps fight heart disease which is the #1 killer of women in North America. There are so many strong and important women in my life and supporting the Alpha Phi Foundation is just one way that I can give back to them.

4. Is there any advice or anything you would want to say to future and current Alpha Phi sisters?

Get as involved with Alpha Phi and any other organizations on campus as you can. It'll make your college experience so much more fulfilling!

5. What is the greatest lesson you've learned in college so far?

Don't let mistakes hold you back. Life is all about progressing and growing as a person and in order to do that you have to learn from your experiences and mistakes.

6. Who is your hero and why?

My dad is my hero. He is the most dedicated, hard-working, and intelligent person I know and I strive every day to be more like him.

7. What actor would play you if your life were turned into a movie and why?

I've been told several times that I look like Miles Teller so i guess I would pick him. I think it's the hair.

8. How has Eta Lambda impacted you?

Eta Lambda has given me some great friends, some wonderful memories, and even a big sister (hi Paige). The lovely ladies of Alpha Phi have enhanced my college experience in countless ways and I couldn't be more grateful to have such a wonderful group of women in my life. #AOE

9. What is one thing you wish someone had told you before coming to Mason?

You may think you have the will power to wake up for a MWF 9 am class but you absolutely DO NOT. Stick to those afternoon classes buddy.

10. What fraternity are you a part of?

I am a part of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity on Campus, I am also the Vice President.

I'm new to Mason but my favorite memory so far was someone giving me a doughnut in the JC because I skipped breakfast that morning.

5. What are you most looking forward to in college?

I'm looking forward to making memories with people I love.

6. What advice would you give to incoming freshman about college?

Time management is the key to success.

7.  What's your guilty pleasure show?

Shameless. Lip is so dreamy I'd watch that show all day if I could.

8. What is an interesting fact about yourself?

My junior year of high school I did a foreign exchange in Spain. I plan on studying abroad here at Mason as well.

9. Who's your role model and why?

My mom, she's unapologetically true to herself and stands up for what she believes in. She's also my best friend. I aspire to be half as cool as she is.

Fabulous Phi: Taylor Espalin

This week's Fabulous Phi is Taylor Espalin for obvious reasons. Taylor is constantly cheering sisters up with her bubbly and fun personality.  Her love for Alpha Phi is infectious and inspiring. She is very passionate about others and personable. If she isn't crying about how much she loves you she is crying about how much we love her. Eta Lambda is lucky to have a sister like Taylor, get to know Taylor by reading below and make sure to come out to King of Hearts to watch her coach one of our contestants!

What year are you? Sophomore

What is your major? Marketing

Where are you from? El Paso, Texas

What is your favorite Alpha Phi Memory? Bonding with the recruitment team over the summer for recruitment. It's the little moments that make the best memories!

What advice can you give girls that are thinking about Greek life? Just be yourself and you'll find the perfect home for you!

What is a surprising fact about you? My birthmark is a highlight in my hair!

She is always trying hard to connect with the pledge sisters and always down to help out. She cares deeply about the chapter and it truly shows! -Colleen B.

Fabulous Phi: Kate Reilly

This week's Fabulous Phi is everyone's favorite girl Kate Reilly.  Kate has always been a ray of sunshine and is constantly brightening sisters days. She is superwoman- running from taking care of children at Flint Hill to attending executive meetings and other extracurricular activities all while managing a challenging academic schedule. Ever since joining Eta Lambda in Fall 2014 Kate Reilly has excelled in contributing back to our chapter and making a difference here on the George Mason campus. It is no shock that Kate earned this week's Fabulous Phi!

1. What is your year and major?

I'm (unfortunately) a senior, and a psychology major! I really enjoy working with kids, and am hoping to be a school psychologist or a family therapist. I started work at Flint Hill School this year, and I absolutely love it! Few things brighten my day more than my junior kindergarten/kindergarten group. I work every week day in their AfterCare program, and I find it so rewarding. The job has affirmed my desire to work with kids and their families in the future.

2. What led you to choose Alpha Phi?

The best thing about Alpha Phi is the genuine joy our sisters bring. I think our sisters ability to make people laugh is the most underrated and awesome thing about this chapter. Be it Christina Orlando's warm and comforting presence, Jen Dan's absurd sense of humor, or CJ's ridiculous snap chats, our sisters never fail to bring joy to bring me joy. The laughter and love I've felt in Alpha Phi is unique and special, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

3. What are your passions and how did they develop?

I'm super cheesy, but my biggest passion is uplifting the people around me. Be it smiling at every person I meet at the homeless shelter, or encouraging the kindergarteners in my AfterCare group to give it their all on an activity, I want to make others happy. This year, I've had the honor of serving as Vice President of Programming and Education for our chapter. This position has presented me with countless opportunities to brighten a sister's day. Before joining Alpha Phi, I never saw myself as the kind of girl who could be in a position of influence. Being a VP of this chapter has completely changed the way I see myself. While I've been presented with new challenges, I've also had amazing opportunities. I think every young woman deserves to explore her potential and leadership is a great way to do so! Alpha Phi has helped to cultivate and develop my passions.

Selfless: concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with one’s own. Kate is the very meaning of selfless. She is constantly going out of her way for sisters and other organizations and students on campus. We are extremely lucky to have Kate in Eta Lambda.
— Gabriella Ebeling

4. What advice do you have for the new members?

My best advice for new members is don't wait. Don't hesitate to jump in with two feet, you will not regret being on an extra committee, or applying for a position you're interested in. Don't wait to ask for help if you're struggling. Your sisters will surprise you, both in your times of joy, and in your struggles. Don't wait to attend the next mixer, or the next sisterhood event. You'll miss out on little moments with the most incredible women. Your time in Alpha Phi will go by so much faster than you ever imagined. Cherish every moment, and seize every opportunity to grow.

5. One thing you would ask a fairy godmother for?

If I could ask a fairy godmother for one thing, I would ask for an extra hour in every day. I would use it to light all the seasonal candles I can get my hands on, and read a book. Since I joined a mother/daughter book club in elementary school, I've had an all-consuming love of reading. Once I start a book, I can't put it down. It would be a full extra hour, but such a nice one.

6. What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

This one was tricky, but I really love weightlifting! I lost a lot of weight over the last year, and my time in the gym certainly helped. My boyfriend is an incredible power lifter, and he convinced me to give squatting, deadlifting, and benching a shot. I used to be a pretty competitive athlete, but weight training was never something I was particularly drawn to. I'm honestly surprised by how much I enjoy it! It's a great way to get in shape, but also makes you feel so accomplished!

7. What has been the most challenging part of college so far?

I think the most challenging part of college for me is knowing when I need to take a break. School can be overwhelming, work can be overwhelming, and so can activities. I think that taking the time out of the day to take care of myself is so important, but hard to do. Finding time to rest is something every college student should do. For me to feel more rested, I try to turn my phone off earlier. While it's easier said than done, reducing my "screen time" at night has helped me to sleep better, allowing me to do more the next day.

Kate Reilly has the most positive spirit I’ve ever met and is always willing to go the extra mile to make someone’s day or help a sister in need. She embodies all of our values in everything she does!

Sister Megan's Adventures in Madrid

Since May 21st I've been in Madrid interning for a company called Fundacion Carolina! The Fundacion Carolina is an organization that is dedicated to promoting Spanish culture throughout Latin America and the United States, mainly by giving scholarships and grants to students to come to Spain to study.

I am here with 9 other people from Mason and have gotten to meet so many awesome people that I wouldn't have had the chance to meet otherwise! I have met people from all over Spain and Europe so this has been a very rich experience. I have absolutely fallen in love with Spain. Apart from Madrid, I've also had the opportunity to travel every weekend so I've gotten to see many parts of Spain including Malaga, Barcelona, Seville, Córdoba, and Toledo. While I've been here I've learned so much about different cultures throughout Spain and also other European countries. Some of my favorite experience while in Spain include being able to watch Real Madrid play Atletico Madrid in the champions league final my first weekend in Madrid. I got to see just how much the Spanish people love futbol. Real Madrid beat Atletico after two overtimes in penalty kicks. Even though I was rooting for Atletico Madrid it was still an awesome and exciting experience.

My favorite place in all of Madrid is Buen Retiro Park. It is a beautiful park located in the center of Madrid. I once spent about six hours inside the park and still had to go back another day because I wasn´t able to see all of it. In the middle of the park there is a small lake perfect for picnicking around or renting a row boat to relax on a sunny day.

One of my favorite things about Spanish cuisine is the tapas! Tapas are small plates of food that come with any drink that you order at certain restaurants. The tapas can be anything from ham and bread to patatas bravas (french fry wedges). Spain is all about socializing while you eat and their famous for their 2 hour long meals so tapas make it perfect to eat with a group of friends and socialize!

This morning I had the opportunity to meet Angel Cabrera, George Mason´s President, through my internship at the Fundacion Carolina. I was able to attend a breakfast with him at Esade, a business school here in Madrid, where he gave a presentation about the differences between universities in the United States and Spain from his perspective as a President. It was amazing to be able to meet and learn so much from our President!

I'm so thankful for everything that I've learned and experienced while in Spain. I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to intern in a foreign country to learn more about international business culture.

Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Memorial Day is a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered. Every family, friend and loved one is in our minds today on this special day. Many of our sisters have family members and loved ones who have served or are currently serving. Read below to learn about Michaela Svaranowic's amazing Grandparents who served for our country!

"Today marks a special day of remembrance to honor those who have died in military service. As a proud Army brat, today is a little extra special for my family as we all take a moment to remember those family members who have since passed away after their years of service. In particular, I would like to take this time to honor my grandmother, Josephine Lemme, and my grandfather, Angelo Lemme, both whom have served in the United States Marines. During the Vietnam War, my grandfather earned the Navy Marine Corps Medal for Heroism during his heroic actions in 1965 in Chu Lai, Vietnam, when he saved a pilot from a burning fighter jet during a hot refueling mission. Although his heroic actions greatly threatened his life, he continued to be prideful to serve his country. My grandparents taught me the extreme honor it is to serve this great country and what it truly means to be apart of a lifelong team."

My Grandpa receiving awards from the Marines

We are all so blessed to live in this free country, because of the sacrifices that brave men and women take, and today we thank those service members and their families. We can't thank families like the Svaranowic's for their service to our country. Alpha Phi wishes all families and friends a wonderful Memorial Day! 🇺🇸

He left the position with big shoes to fill, and we will forever be grateful for all he has done for us.

"Tell me about it, Stud" Greek Week Team 6

Our community prides itself on the pillars of leadership, service, philanthropy, community, friendship and scholarship. During the year, GMU Greeks participate in a variety of events that directly reflect our core values. One of our biggest events of the year is Greek Week. This year we were paired up with the gentlemen of Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Sigma Phii and the ladies of Lambda Pi Chi and Alpha Kappa Alpha. We were "Team Fifties".

Shackathon: The week kicked off to Shack-easily one of GMU's more favored event. Our team came together near North plaza to construct our Shack to help raise awareness of poverty and homelessness and we also raised funding for Habitat for Humanity. Our members had been relentlessly cutting and shaping countless boxes and it all paid off. Take a look!

Food Drive: On Monday we came together to donate our cans of non-perishable food for the charity Food for Others. Collectively as a Greek Community we were able to collect 24,300 cans for Food for Others. Our team specifically donated the most cans for this charity!

Aquatics Night: Our fabulous members came together for a rad performance of synchronized swimming in addition to a compilation of relays and races. Our team got first in our synchro swimming routine!

Trivia Night: Trivia night is always a fun night and this year was no exception!

Field Day: From penalties to tug a war this day was filled with sweat and endurance-we are so proud of everyone who participated!

Greek Sing: After countless hours of rehearsal and sweat it finally paid off on Sunday afternoon. Check out our team members killing it!

Video: https://www.facebook.com/GMUAlphaPhi/videos/1349683375058833/

The best part of this Greek Week was the bond we created with our partnering teams and that we raised the most money for Habitat for Humanity and donated the most cans for FoodforOthers. Ever since Greek Week ended we have supported one another in intramural games, study sessions and enjoyed each other's company. Thank you to everyone who helped out with Greek Week to make this one memorable and incredible! Can't wait for next year!

“This year was such a memorable Greek week! Teaming up with PiKapp and Asig was so much fun and I’m glad that our chapters have been able to extend our friendship even beyond Greek week!”
— Christina Orlando, President of Alpha Phi

"From the suspenseful minutes leading up to the birth of team 6, after 2 re draws of teams in that meeting room back in February I knew this would be the start of an incredible experience. Having worked with Pi Kapp the previous year I already knew their brothers were determined and hard working. To the ladies of Alpha phi, you all really show what it means to care and be the best at everything you do. Although the end result isn't what we wanted, it really doesn't matter. What matters is the difference we made in the community and the positive outlook that it hopefully gives outsiders on greek life. Also the fact that we were definitely the hardest workers out there and it showed. A special shoutout to Hannah, Susie, Christina, Ian, Jason and cash for all the countless hours they put in to making this process a huge success. For me working with them, I feel like I learned a lot about ourselves as leaders and the potential we have to bring to all of our organizations, especially with all of our chapters heading in positive directions from this semester. Along with that, was the friendships and bonds formed between our team and it was an honor to be president of an organization that was a part of this. I wish the best of luck to everyone on team 50s in the rest of your semester."

-Matt Solomon, President of Alpha Phi Sigma

Fabulous Phi: Michaela Svaranowic

This week's Fabulous Phi is definitely well deserved. Meet Michaela Svaranowic our Vice President of Chapter Operations. She is one of the hardest working sister anyone has met and exudes love and joy. Michaela first joined Alpha Phi in Fall '14 and has gone above and beyond for our chapter ever since then. Read more about her below and see why she was chosen for this week's Fabulous Phi!

  1. What is your year and major? I'm a sophomore majoring in Finance 😊
  2. What led you to choose Alpha Phi? As an Army brat I never believed that I could find a "home". However, within Alpha Phi I saw for the first time in my life a place I could call home. I loved the diversity in the chapter, the empowerment of women, and the genuine love that filled the room and today I am honored and blessed to call Alpha Phi my home.
  3. What are your passions and how did they develop? I have my cosmetology license which I got in high school and I have been doing hair for almost four years now! I also LOVE math! (I have my unit circle hanging on my wall!) I really developed my love for math in high school when I had an opportunity to work at Jefferson Lab, a local National Accelerator Facility for the Department of Energy. I got to work on an engineering project for a safety system upgrade!

"This is when I got to introduce the program I was in to the secretary of the department of energy"

4. How has Alpha Phi impacted you? Alpha Phi has impacted me by teaching me true selflessness. Being a part of a sorority is not about what you can get from it, but more about what you can give to it. "What is in it for me?" is important but asking, "How can I better my chapter, my sisters, my peers, our philanthropy, my school, the community, and myself" are much more valuable questions.

5. What advice do you have for the incoming Freshman? Always have positive attitude (it will take you very far in life), smile because why not, try new things, and lastly do not let your stubbornness control your life (like mine used to!)

"This is me on the day I got my cosmetology license!"

These are only a couple of amazing things Michaela has achieved and we are incredibly lucky to have her as a part of our Eta Lambda Chapter. Thank you for being such a great role model and we are so excited to see all of your future successes!
